KS3 Numeracy

Numeracy is the ability to reason and to apply simple numerical concepts.   Basic numeracy skills consist of comprehending fundamental mathematics like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Substantial aspects of numeracy also include number sense, operation sense, computation, measurement, geometry, and statistics. A numerically literate person can manage and respond to the mathematical demands of life. 

Numeracy was introduced at the Grange in June 2014, as an additional lesson to Mathematics, for all year 7 and 8 pupils.  The aim is to improve speed and accuracy of our students’ mental arithmetic and to prepare pupils for the start of their GCSE Mathematics in year 9.  Numeracy is assessed through a series of mental arithmetic questions designed to consolidate basic skills and also to stretch and challenge our students.

The numeracy scheme of work consists of the following objectives in each of the six half-terms (HT):
