In Year 7 and 8 learners focus on the concepts of line, tone, shape, space, pattern, texture, form and colour. Projects may be 2 or 3 dimensional, developing skills in drawing, painting, design, construction etc.

All learners in Year 7 will follow a mini foundation course at the start of the year learning about the fundamental elements of the subject. Learners will then follow schemes of work, which will focus on learning transferable skills which can be used across the curriculum.

Learners are encouraged to expand their specialist vocabulary. They will each have a sketchbook in order to experiment, record and investigate materials and ideas, encouraging independent working. Integral to each project is reference to the work of the artist, designer or craft person from different cultures and periods.

In addition to classwork, learners will be set regular homework tasks, which will involve accessing the internet to research visual and written information on artists and their work. They may also be asked to produce drawing and sketching activities and collect materials.

Regular assessment and monitoring ensures progression through the Key Stage. During of each project work is evaluated and learners decide where improvements can be made. Work is displayed in the Art department to celebrate the success of the learners.

Component 210%10%10%10%

All GCSE learners studying Art and Design follow the AQA Specification and will be given the opportunity to experience painting and drawing, 3D construction and mixed media. Component 1, the portfolio of work accounts for 60% of the final mark, and component  2 the externally set assignment (exam) which takes place in the spring term of the final year of the course, is worth the remaining 40%.

During the course, learners will be expected to produce two/three projects of coursework, engaging with, analysing and reflecting up on the artwork of artists, craftworkers and designers. Learners will be given guided project themes in which they will have the opportunity to use a range of processes, techniques and media throughout their sketchbooks to develop ideas, record observations and research artists. Learners may be given more individual projects, based on their level of skill and capability, as the course develops.

Homework tasks set include research, sketchbook and preparation work. This will be discussed with learners on an individual basis.

Regular feedback and monitoring ensures progression through the Key Stage, linked to the AQA exam board assessment criteria for Art. At the end of each project work is evaluated and learners decide where improvements can be made to develop and progress further. Artwork is exhibited in the Art department at the end of the course for moderation and to celebrate the success of the learners.
